PennDOT contractors and subcontractors are halfway done the construction of the new SR309 (Center Street) bridge in Tamaqua.

The work is being done to replace the structurally deficient SR309 bridge over the Little Schuylkill River.

During the first phase of construction, contractors built a temporary roadway and two-lane bridge to carry traffic over the river. Once the temporary bridge was complete, the second phase of construction involved the closing of the old bridge and the diverting both lanes of SR309 traffic onto the temporary steel bridge.

The third and final phase of construction involves shifting both lanes of traffic onto the new bridge. The temporary bridge will then be removed. This project, which started in September of 2011, also included the relocation of utility lines, drainage upgrades, new pedestrian walkways and new roadway approaches.

The cost of the project is $3,180,000, which was awarded to Clearwater Construction Inc. of Mercer PA. Work is estimated to be complete by May of 2013.
