Bombers get comeback win over ND

Things weren't actually going to well for Palmerton on Monday in its Colonial League baseball matchup against Notre Dame of Green Pond.

The Bombers spotted the Crusaders a five-run lead in the first two innings, but with ace Tyler Svetik on the mound, all they needed was to wake up their bats and they knew they had a chance to get back in the thick of things. And that's just what they did. The end result was a 9-6 win that lifted them to 4-6 overall, but more importantly 4-3 in league play."We play seven innings and that's what I told the kids," said Palmerton head coach Tom Smelas afterwards. "You play seven and you give yourself a chance."It was a tough start, but we gutted the first inning out and the rest of the way we gave up a two spot somewhere along the line but that was it. Defensively, we played outstanding and made the routine plays and that's what we preach. You make the routine plays, you're going to stay in the game. You're not going to win all of them, but you're going to stay in them."The Bombers turned double plays to get out of the first and third innings and turned out to be huge.Notre Dame jumped out to a 4-0 lead with three in the first and one in the second.Scoring six runs in the second inning and chasing home three more in the bottom of the sixth, put the Bombers two games behind North Division leader Pen Argyl and tied them for the wild card berth. With one out, Svetik reached on an erro and scored on a Brett Snyder double. C.J. Kressman followed with an RBI single and Mike Horvath walked. Kressman scored on an infield single by Aaron Cook and and Horvath crossed the plate when Tanner Gutekunst reached on an error. RBI singles by Mike Sander and Ryan Snyder put the Bombers on top 6-4.After the Crusaders tied it up at 6-6, the Bombers scored the three in the sixth to win it on an RBI double by Svetik, RBI single by Snyder and RBI triple by Horvath.Svetik ended the game with two big strikeouts in the top of the seventh."It was warm out there and the pitch count was up there," said Svetik. "It was tough when they put up four runs in the first two innings, but I just stayed with it and my team helped me and picked me up big time.""We seem to get on a roll every once in a while where we just get hit after hit," said Smelas looking back at the two big innings. "The big thing this year has been two-strike hits and two-out hits and that's whre we have done a lot of damage."Svetik not only got the win, but helped himself out going 2-for-4 with a triple and single, scored two runs and had two RBIs. Horvath was a perfect 3-for-3 with a triple and two singles, scored a run and had one RBI. Cressman had two hits and scored two runs and Snyder had two hits, scored a run and had a big RBI in the sixth.No. Dame 310 200 0 - 6 12 4Palmerton 060 003 x - 9 17 0Dillard, Scott (6) and Clearly; Svetik and Sander.
