A Kelayres man is lodged in the Schuylkill County Prison, Pottsville, after allegedly sexually assaulting a young girl in 2007. The case came to light recently when the victim, now 11 years old, reported the indecent contact to Kline Township Police.

Ted M. Vanderkarr, 40, of 3 Center St., Kelayres, was in the court of District Judge Stephen Bayer last week to answer to the charges, which were filed by Kline Chief of Police John Petrilla. Vanderkarr was charged with rape of a child, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, aggravated indecent assault of a child (less than 13), indecent assault of a person less than 13, corruption of minors and endangering the welfare of children.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, the child slept over at Vanderkarr's home on three occasions in 2007. In each instance, when her aunt left the home, Vanderkarr sexually assaulted her in various ways. When questioned by police on March 2, 2012, Vanderkarr admitted he may have had inappropriate contact with the child when she was a guest in his home, but characterized the contact as "accidental, wrestling and a tickle bout." Under further questioning on March 12, Vanderkarr admitted there had been sexual contact, but maintained it was brought about the "wrestling."

Judge Bayer sent all of the charges to court and imposed a bail of $50,000 straight cash bond. Unable to post that amount, Vanderkarr was escorted to the prison in Pottsville.
