Only a handful of seats remain for Carbon County veterans to take an all-expenses-paid bus trip to Washington D.C.

The fourth annual veterans trip to our nation's capitol will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 4. Veterans will travel by bus and leave about 6:30 a.m.

The trip is for any veteran who hasn't gone in each of the past three years who either entered the service from Carbon County, or those who currently live in the county.

Along the way, they will visit the Vietnam, World War II, Korean War, Marine and Tomb of the Unknowns memorials. About 60 veterans and a dozen caregivers have signed up for the trip.

Richard and Darlene Nothstein of Palmerton will once again sponsor the trip. On their return home, the group will stop in York, where they will be treated to a country buffet dinner.

"We'll be laying some wreaths at the memorials, possibly Lt. Gen. (Rhett A.) Hernandez and one of his aides will be there to spend some time with us," Nothstein said. "It's been a great experience going with these guys and gals to share their concerns, and to know some of them are living better being able to get rid of the guilt for going to war and having to do the killings that normal people are not expected to do."

Veterans who meet the requirements and would like to attend must fill out a form, which is available at the Country Harvest Family Market, Carbon County Veterans Affairs Office, local veterans' posts, or the office of state Rep. Doyle Heffley (R-Carbon).

The forms may be returned to Richard Nothstein, 526 Harvard Court, Palmerton, PA 18071, or dropped off or mailed to the Country Harvest Family Market, 572 Delaware Avenue, Palmerton.
