Two DUI-related crashes probed

State police at Schuylkill Haven reported investigating two driving under the influence (DUI) related crashes early Sunday morning, Sept. 11.

Troopers said about 1:25 a.m. Michael Scott Zelinsky, 21, of Pottsville, was driving a 2000 Oldsmobile Alero GL eastbound on Second Mountain Road in North Manheim Township, when he lost control as he approached Manheim Road. The car crossed the center line and went onto the north berm where Zelinsky oversteered in an attempt to regain control.The car then turned clockwise and traveled sideways back across the eastbound lane and then struck a grassy embankment, flipping over onto its roof where it came to rest.Zelinsky sustained minor scrapes, troopers said. He was found to be under the influence and was transported to the Schuylkill Medical Center-S. Jackson St., Pottsville, for a blood test.The second crash occurred about 2:50 a.m. at 2062 Long Run Road, in North Manheim Township. Troopers said Edward V. Competus, 47, of Cressona, was westbound in a 1965 Ford Mustang when he accelerated the car and lost control.The car crossed the center line and went onto the south berm where it struck a parked 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt. After impact the Mustang spun counter-clockwise and struck the rigth front of the Cobalt sending the left rear tire careening west. The tire eventually struck a tree stump before coming to rest against a porch at 2054 Long Run Road.Competus remained at the scene but his passenger, William McGovern, 44, of Schuylkill Haven, fled the scene but was later located at his residence. He sustained significant lacerations to his arm, troopers said, and was taken to the hospital by a family member. Competus sustained a head laceration and was taken to the SMC-S. Jackson St. for treatment.Competus was found to be under the influence and submitted to a blood test.The Mustang and Cobalt, which is owned by Brenda Miller, of the above address, sustained severe damages.
