Tamaqua motorists warned after mishap

Tamaqua Police want to remind motorists using Center Street to be aware of traffic pulling into and out of business parking lots, as well as southbound lane restrictions.

Center Street, between Broad and Cedar, does not have a passing lane. There are left turn lanes, but they do not extend the entire block, just the immediate areas of the intersections. The reminder comes after a Thursday morning accident. A school bus used to transport Tamaqua Area students was stopped in the southbound lane of Center Street at 8:45 a.m., in the area of Fegley's Mini Mart. The driver observed a 2006 Toyota at the entrance/exit of the Fegley lot.The driver, Rose M. Dematteo of MaryD, was waiting for an opening in traffic in order to make a left turn to travel north. The driver waved Dematteo through at the same time a 1998 Pontiac Grand Am, operated by Benita L. Moyer of 107 Hunter St., Tamaqua, began to pass the bus to enter the left turn lane. As the Toyota came around the front of the bus, it was struck by the Pontiac. The accident report indicates there was not enough room for a vehicle to pass the stopped bus without partially entering the northbound lane of traffic. No one was injured and damage to the vehicles was deemed light to moderate.
