A Tamaqua man has been cited for driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol following a Friday night incident.

An officer on patrol observed a green BMW at 10:18 p.m., driving slowly in the middle of North Greenwood Street. The car ran the red light at Broad and Greenwood streets and the officer conducted a traffic stop.

The driver was identified as James J. Gatens, 59, of 320 Arlington St. A strong odor of alcohol was detected on Gatens and he was asked to perform field sobriety tests, which he failed. He was then given a portable breath test, which indicated a blood alcohol content of .18 percent, more than twice the legal limit of .08.
