Scraps of pink polka-dotted fabric are being credited with helping fight breast cancer.

Last year, several friendly quilt ladies at the Quilted Crow, 175 Interchange Road, Route 209, Lehighton, were each given an 18- by 22-inch scrap of pink polka dotted fabric and were challenged to use the fabric to create a quilt block with the theme "Breast Cancer Awareness."They then displayed the blocks and asked everyone to donate "dollar" votes with the top vote-getter being named the challenge winner a square utilizing the mariners compass pattern, created by Valda Musselman. Also making quilt squares were Ana Hoff, Renee Herman, Cheryl Hank, Mary Ann Drury, Donna Dillon, Diane Brennan, Betsy Lawrence, Mary Giampapa, Barbara Krajnak and Joan Marcucci. Owners of The Quilted Crow, Cindy Mengel-Smith and Jane Heckman, also made a square.The funds raised through the quilt block challenge were donated in 2010 to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.Then this year, Mengel-Smith and Heckman came up with the idea that the squares should be put into a quilt, so Judy Snyder took the task to create the "Fight on Sister" masterpiece. The quilt is dedicated to all whose lives have been affected by breast cancer.The women donated the quilt to Lehighton Area Lioness Lions Club and are selling raffle tickets this month. The money raised through this fundraiser will also be donated to fight breast cancer. The winner will be selected on Nov. 3.LALLC will have tickets available for the quilt at the Pink Light Walk, a breast cancer awareness event to be held Tuesday, Oct. 4, at the Lehighton Recreation Center. Pre-registration for this event is required by emailing

pinklightwalk@yahoo.com and including your name, address and telephone number and whether you are a survivor or supporter.Registration will begin at 5:30 p.m. Warm up is at 6:30 p.m., followed by the walk. Participants will be walking from the Lehighton Recreation Center to the Lehighton Amphitheatre and back.All those participating are asked to wear a pink shirt to increase awareness of breast cancer. Nicole Beckett will be the honorary chairwoman for the event.Participants need not be a survivor to be involved.Pink light bulbs will be available to commemorate the event and it is hoped that those residing along the route will have them lit on their porch.Following the walk, light refreshments will be served. There is no charge to participate in the event.There will be a goody bag for the first 300 registrants.The event is held rain or shine.
