Slow economic growth reaches county level

The slow economic growth reached the Schuylkill County Planning Commission as for the first time in a long while it had no county subdivision plans to review at its monthly meeting Wednesday evening at the courthouse in Pottsville.

Also the report on the issuance of zoning permits showed one of the lowest numbers for a month in many years.Only 25 permits were issued in October and the estimated costs of construction was $729,2348. Melochick, Minersville, residential garage, $28,000; Cynthia Puhl, Union Township, pole barn, $15,000; and Larry Roger Ebert, Barry Township, residential pole style garage, $80,000.Review projectsThe commission reviewed a number of projects and had no comment.Schuylkill County is applying for a general permit from the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) for the replacement of water obstructions and encroachments at a county bridge which spans Mahanoy Creek.The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is seeking a permit from DEP for construction on State Route 61 in West Brunswick Township and Deer Lake Borough for reconstruction on the existing road and a new roadway construction, drainage installation, construction of storm water management facilities, replacement of two bridges over Pine Creek, and the construction of a new bridge over Pine Creek.Norwegian Township is planning to revise its zoning ordinance to address planned residential development and open space requirements.Riverside Cremation Services, LLC, Schuylkill Haven, is applying to DEP for a general operating permit to operate a crematory.The commission granted Babb Company a 120 extension to complete it final land development plan.Directors James Setlock and Anthony Prudent voted against the extension claiming the commission's policy is to limit to 90 day extensions.
