Kidder Township honors 'lifesavers'

The Kidder Township Board of Supervisors recognized four outstanding individuals who contributed to the community in lifesaving ways in 2010.

Chosen on the basis of the service they provided were Lake Harmony Firefighter, Joseph Lennon, Emergency Service Person of the Year; Gene Getz, Albrightsville Emergency Service Person of the Year; Kerril Lanum, Emergency Service Person of the Year, Kidder Township Fire Department and Lake Harmony Rescue Squad; Firefighter, winner of Service Person of the Year, Terry Smith,.The Pennsylvania State Wildlife Association will help control Canadian geese on Lake Harmony but Kidder Township has to be on board to move on an ordinance telling them it's okay. President of the Lake Harmony Watershed Preservation Group, Frank Way, told Kidder Township Supervisors at their meeting Thursday night that the state needed a law eliminating feeding the birds.He said that the state was willing to assist the township in lethal control however an ordinance was necessary to eliminate feeding the birds to show the state that residents support the move. The State Wildlife Association received much backlash a few years ago when former County Executive of Allegheny County Dan Onoroto in Pittsburgh moved to wipe out most of an entire population of a North Park in Pittsburgh Canadian geese setting off debate in smaller jurisdictions over control of wildlife.Supervisors are in favor of an ordinance which forces state support in the matter. The high fecal matter in the lake raises health and quality of life concerns. They agreed with Way and in seeking resolution along with Lake Harmony Preservation Group.Supervisors are entering into a Joint Board of Appeals Pursuant to The Uniform Construction Code, primarily to assist on Ruling on Appeals and establishing a board consisting of five members. The terms of the first five members include a five-year, four-year, three-tear, two-year and a one-year term.Thereafter, the term of each member shall be for five years. No paid employees are anticipated although the occasion may arise to pay for professionals such as engineers to assist in decisions or to confer on appealed matters during an appeal process. Kidder Township will join Franklin, Mahoning, East Penn, Penn Forrest and Towamensing townships along with the boroughs of Nesquehoning, Jim Thorpe, and Lehighton borough, as well as other municipalities in an inter-municipal agreement establishing the joint board.In other action:• A resolution was adopted by supervisors instituting Kidder Township's Emergency Operations Plan mandated by the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Services code. The plan now in effect conforms to the Carbon County Emergency Operations Guideline and supersedes all previous plans. It was signed by Robert Dobosh, Municipal Emergency Management Coordinator, John P. Finnerty, Kidder Township secretary, and Larry Polansky, chairman.• Upon recommendation in a letter dated May 3, 2001 from Hanover Engineering and Associates, supervisors recommended lowering Golden Oaks Village bonding project from $250,000 to $50,000, based upon engineer Andrew Bohl's site inspections. After discussion about water problems, landscaping and drainage, supervisor Polansky said these issues will be addressed.• Lake Harmony Association Road Clean Up is set for Saturday, June 4. This is in preparation for the 2011 Firemens State Convention to be held in September.• The Pennsylvania Special Olympics in Carbon County will hold its third annual horse show on September 4 at the Getz Farm in Albrightsville.• Delina Rodrigues, a Carbon County Athlete was named Female Athlete of The Year in Pennsylvania.
