Motorcycle Run benefits food resource center

It was a day of fellowship, family, music and food on Saturday in the Pavillion at American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert after the Motorcycle Tour of the Poconos commenced there as local businesses in Carbon and Monroe County donated goods for auction and services to help local families in need and to restock provisions that were almost gone.

The day's event started at 9 a.m. at the event's main sponsor Shoch's Harley Davidson Motorcycle in Snydersville and ended at around 2:30 p.m. with about 200 people eating hamburgers and roasting pig and entering the event with bags of canned goods for the pantry at the Supplemental Food Resource Center located in the Effort United Methodist Church on Merwinsburg Road in Effort.Humbled by the attendance and grateful by the outpouring of support from the community director Mark Baylis said, "This was a good turnout. They did very well."Looking around at the crowded pavilion and referring to the American Legion Riders 927 who collected money from each biker who rode in the days tour, in addition, those who attended brought canned goods and paid a fee for entry.Baylis was especially grateful, he said pointing to one organizer, Dawn Schmidt who stood in command at the podium calling out winners from the abundance of gifts donated by area vendors, "It was a good day."Post Commander and President of American Legion Riders Everett Shaver told the audience that the next event planned will be a Poker Run Scheduled for June 18, and the funds raised will benefit local vets returning home.He mentioned that one returning soldier is now in need of some help and transitioning into civilian life looking for employment. The strength shown by the outpouring in donations by local businesses and community exhibits the posts commitment to be there for these veterans returning home. The food was donated and prepared and served by volunteers, including items from Arctic Paws, Exotic Tans, DeMarco's Bakery, Murphy's Loft, Old Mill Pub, Millers Flower Shop, Carquest, Sugar Hollow Farms and many more.
