Plans were finalized by the Last of the Panther Valley Deep Coal Miners Club to construct a monument dedicated to the coal mining industry, past and present, near the tunnel mouth entrance of the old Lanscoal No. 9 mine, the last of the deep mines to operatin gin the valley. The monument is being made possible in part by the Bethlehem Mines. In June, 1972 when Lanscoal was finally sealed, it was the oldest operating deep anthracite mine in the world.
