There may not have been that many spectators at Marian and Jim Thorpe's track meet on Tuesday, but that didn't stop the Olympians' P.J. Johnson from putting on a show.
Johnson placed first in all four events that he competed in en route to leading his fellow track team to a 75-66 victory over the Colts. The junior took home both sprinting events (100M and 200M), the long jump and was the last leg of the winning 400M Relay team. As it turns out, he wasn't even 100 percent.
"I actually felt a little sore," said Johnson. "I just pushed myself through it though. This was my third time doing the 200, so it's taking a little time to get used to it."
Despite the soreness, Johnson came within pretty close to tying some school records. His time of 11.5 in the 100-meter dash was only 0.3 seconds behind Phil Redline's record of 11.2 set back in 2007.
Johnson also posted a solid time in the 200-meter dash with a 23.5. The school record belongs to Cart St. Hill, who set the record with a 22.9 a year ago. The 100-meter dash was one of the first events of the day, while the 200-meter was one of the last.
"I think it is something I can improve on," said Johnson. "It was just a sore day. I think if my muscles weren't as sore I would have been able to do better."
In the middle of the competition, Johnson took the anchor in the 400-meter relay and helped his team to a first place finish with a time of 46 seconds. His long jump of 19 feet, 11 1/2 inches was also good enough to win.
Two other Jim Thorpe teammates won multiple events as well. Brittany Holland won both the high jump and the javelin. She managed to win with a jump of 4 feet, 6 inches and a throw of 95-feet.
Fellow female Samantha Harlan posted victories in each hurdles event. She took the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles with times of 16.9 and 52 seconds respectively. The two helped the Lady Olympians defeat the Fillies, 91-50.
"I am pretty satisfied with my times," said Harlan. "I expected a better time of course, but I am pretty sure as the year goes on and the weather gets warmer that I will do better. I am hoping to knock of at least .5 or .6 seconds.
"I have to work on my hip placement for when am coming down over the hurdles. I also work on staying on my toes and keeping up my speed. I am a heel runner, so it's been an adjustment."
Marian had a boy and a girl athlete take home multiple events. Senior Gillian Ferko went as far as to win three events. The senior won the shot put, the discus and the triple jump.
"I was glad with my performance considering I haven't practiced a lot," said Ferko. "I think it is a good start to the beginning of the year."
Ferko posted winning throws of 29 feet, 10 inches (shot put) and 97 feet, five inches (discus). Her triple jump went for 30 feet, nine inches.
"I was pretty happy with the shot put because I wasn't expecting a lot," Ferko admitted. "I was expecting a little more in the discus, but I will chalk it up to it still being the beginning of the year. I still need to practice a little bit more on that.
"The weather didn't help either. I could definitely tell it hindered me, especially in the triple jump. I could feel that I didn't have as much fluidity and momentum."
Chris Barletta took home the high jump and the triple jump. He hopped, skipped and jumped for 38 feet, 10 inches, and flew over the 5 feet, 6 inch mark in the high jump.
