March 5, 1967

Bombarded with protests from township supervisors, White Haven civic leaders, Penn Lakes Assn. and sportsmen's clubs, and the State Department of Health, Lehigh Valley Railroad halted dumping of several hundred tons of chemical-laden soil along its abandoned right of way in Dennison Township about a half mile from Penn Lake. The contaminated soil was scooped up for disposal after a train wreck at Hillsboro, N.J. The dumping halted after the railroad brought 12 additional gondolas of noxious soil to the scene.
