Carbon County District Attorney Gary F. Dobias announced today that he will seek re-election to the Office of District Attorney of Carbon County. A Democrat, he will seek his party's nomination for his sixth four-year term in the May 17 Primary Election.
District Attorney Dobias has been a prosecutor in the District Attorney's office since 1980 and has served as the District Attorney since 1992.
During his tenure, District Attorney Dobias has witnessed an increase in the scope and complexity of the thousands of cases handled by his office. Saying he has enjoyed the challenges of the job tremendously, Dobias stated he has an excellent staff that is committed and has worked extremely hard. The District Attorney said he wants to continue to improve the criminal justice system and make the various communities in Carbon County safer. Dobias is currently the director of the Carbon County Drug Task Force.
District Attorney Dobias has practiced law in Carbon County since his admission to the Bar in 1974. He has also served as an adjunct faculty professor at Lehigh Carbon Community College and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Pennsylvania State Police Youth Organization known as Camp Cadet Troop N.
A native of Palmerton, Attorney Dobias is a son of Frank Dobias of Palmerton and the late LaRue Dobias. He and his wife, Tammy, have two children, Rebecca, an attorney in Virginia, and Jeffrey, a teacher and coach in Georgia.
Dobias is a member of St. John Episcopal Church, Palmerton.
He graduated from Palmerton Area High School and received his bachelor of arts degree from Franklin and Marshall College. In 1974, he graduated from and received his law degree from Memphis University.
Dobias is a member of the American Bar Association, the Pennsylvania Bar Association and the Carbon County Bar Association, of which he is the former chancellor.
He is also admitted to practice before the Pennsylvania Superior Court, Pennsylvania Supreme Court, United States District Court and United States Supreme Court.
In 2001, Dobias was elected to the executive committee of the Pennsylvania District Attorney's Association, the governing body of all District Attorneys in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. He is a former secretary/treasurer of the organization and in 2008-09 served as its president.
Dobias is a member of the Carbon County Democratic Executive Committee.
