Wilson whips NW NW

In the first half of last night's Colonial League basketball match-up, Northwestern stuck to its game plan and utilized pressure defense to limit the highly-touted Warriors' point production. Much to their chagrin, though, the Tigers had only scored 10 points of their own.

Wilson eventually turned things around after the break and won going away, 51-25.Both teams' defensive stands created havoc with incessant pressure, endless turnovers and fast breaks.Wilson only scored 19 points in the opening half and head coach Bob Frankenfield was unsettled."At halftime, I let my kids know I was annoyed," Frankenfield said. "We challenged them about their character and we challenged them as a basketball team."The first quarter's defensive display produced a 7-1 Wilson lead after eight minutes. Andrew Rivera's free throw with 1:11 left got Northwestern its initial point. Kowan Scott's six was tops in the frame for Wilson (7-3, 5-1).The second saw a 5-0 run for the Tigers get things started. A Rivera jumper with 1:46 left in the half cut Wilson'd lead to 13-10. A 6-0 Warrior run to end the half opened some breathing room.Wilson entered the game coming off a huge win over Notre Dame on Tuesday and Frankenfield's feared his team would expect an easy win. He commended the Tigers for not allowing it."(Coach Dugan) does a really good job of getting them ready and he's too much of a disciplinarian to allow that to occur," he said. The halftime speech by Frankenfield worked and Wilson erupted out of the lockerroom."They do a great job of using their aggressiveness and their length to success," Northwestern head coach BJ Dugan said. "They took us out of our offense."In the ensuing eight minutes, Wilson outscored the Tigers 22-5 to pull away for good. Gerald Terry poured in six in the frame to lead the Warrior spurt. Both benches were cleared in the fourth as the teams matched points. In the game, Wilson was led by Terry's 12 points and Scott's 10 points and nine rebounds.Northwestern (1-9, 0-5), got a team-high seven points from Andrew Rivera. Payton Bachman and Matt Rivera both added six points. The Tigers have a quick turnaround as they host Blue Mountain tonight."That will be our fourth game in five days and we have to worry about fatigue. Bouncing back after three home losses is going to be difficult," Dugan said. "But we're going to have to play 32 minutes of a game not 16."Wilson won the JV game, 57-28 score. Jarred Binder had eight for the Tigers.WILSONStetler 0-0-0-0, Terry 5-2-2-12, Parker 1-0-0-2, Cooper 2-0-0-4, Lewis 0-2-2-2, Sostorecz 3-0-1-6, Scott 4-1-3-10, Thatcher 1-0-0-2, Spirko 2-4-6-8, Healey 1-0-0-2, Larson 0-0-0-0, Smeltz 1-1-1-3, Robinson 0-0-0-0, Dailey 0-0-0-0.
