An injured female was airlifted and a driver was taken into custody following a three-vehicle head-on collision that closed a section of SR-54 around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the intersections of Fairview Street and Barnesville Drive/Pine Creek Drive, SR-54, at the border of Ryan and Rush Townships in Barnesville.
Police, firefighters, ambulance, and rescue workers from Quakake, Ryan Township, Hometown, Rush Township, Summit Hill, Tamaqua and Delano responded to the accident. Reportedly, a male driver of a green Mercury Tracer GS, while driving east on Barnesville Dr., SR-54, overshot a curve, where it entered into oncoming traffic and collided head-on into the passenger side of a black Toyota Corolla CE, which was traveling west on SR-54. The Mercury then continued a short distance on the wrong side of the SR-54, where it struck the west-bound guard rail and passenger side of a white Buick LeSabre Limited.
Paramedics from the Lehighton Ambulance Association transported an injured woman from the Toyota Corolla to an awaiting MedEvac helicopter, which landed at the Lakeside Ballroom, after Tamaqua Rescue Squad and other fire companies had to use the jaws-of-life to extricate her from her vehicle. Rush Township Police took the driver of the Mercury into custody and are still investigating.
Airbags were deployed in all three vehicles. Fire Police from the Hometown and Quakake detoured traffic and closed that part of SR-54 until fluids were removed and all three vehicles were cleared from the scene. All the names of the affected and the extent of their injuries weren't known as of press time.
