Alex Lebo, of Lake Hauto and a sixth grader at Panther Valley Middle School, was the top money maker for the school's Hoops for Heart event, an annual community service program to raise funds for the American Heart Association during National Heart Month.
Alex raised $125 for the cause in memory of his late grandfather John "Sonny" Kovatch of Nesquehoning.
Students at the school participated and totaled $1542.09 for the benefit. They received a sponsor sheet and jumped for the hoops and to raise the money. Prizes were given out to students and the school will receive a peg board for the gymnasium and some other gym equipment.
They were taught a lesson about keeping their hearts healthy and joining the fight against our nation's number one and number three killers-cardiovascular diseases and stroke. Health/Physical education teacher, Bobbi Sisock, was the coordinator of the program at the school.
