A fast moving fire destroyed a row of five homes in the Schuylkill County community of Girardville on Wednesday evening.

The blaze was discovered about 6 p.m. at 112 W. Main St., and quickly spread to adjoining structures.

Fire officials said the fire was started by a spark from a Duraflame log in a wood burner in the basement at 112 W. Main.

Other properties affected by the blaze included 116, 114, 110 and 108 W. Main, all destroyed with the property at 116 collapsing.

Fire companies from several surrounding communities including Ashland, Shenandoah, Mahanoy Plane, Mahanoy City and Frackville assisted Girardville firefighters in battling the blaze.

The five homes were all four story structures. Not all the homes were occupied, fire officials said. It was not immediately known how many people were left homeless.
