Wind-swept fire destroys home

A fast moving wind-swept fire destroyed a home Saturday afternoon along Church Road in Penn Forest Township, Carbon County. The fire was first discovered by a passing motorist just before 3 p.m. When the man, who is a New Jersey resident as well as a volunteer firefighter, raced to the home, the single family wood frame dwelling was fully involved. He attempted to search for family members, but reported not seeing any cars in the driveway and felt by that time it would have been too late to save any occupants of the home. When firefighters from numerous Carbon County companies arrived on scene, only a shell of the home remained. Firemen were hampered by gusty winds and frigid temperatures. No injuries were reported. Firefighters had to run a 5-inch hose almost a half mile to reach the blazing dwelling.
