Tamaqua citizens are concerned over the number of closed sidewalks throughout the borough during PennDOT's current Central Business District Improvement Project that is affecting most intersections on SR209 and SR309. The construction is causing people to stand, wait, and even walk through moving traffic at many busy intersections. The project is designed to help improve safety and mitigate traffic congestion in the downtown and will include traffic signal upgrades, railroad/emergency services traffic signal preemption devices, pedestrian signal upgrades, new curb ramps, new signs and traffic control sensors in the central business district. A representative with one of the contracting companies doing the construction stated, "The sidewalks are clearly marked as closed and people should find a safe alternate route." Most of the closed sidewalks are expected reopen in the next few weeks. Pictured is closed sidewalks at the Five Points intersection.
