With several inches of rain falling on Saturday in Carbon, Schuylkill, Lehigh, Northampton and Monroe counties, some residents were seeing washed out driveways and flooded basements, while others saw their streets flooded and nearly impassable.
That is what residents of East Penn Township in Carbon County noted when the Lizard Creek overflowed onto busy Route 895 on Saturday. This section in the Ashfield area of East Penn Township is prone to high water events on Route 895 when the stream over flows its banks.
According to meteorologists at Weather Underground, the Lehighton area has already had twice as much rain for August as is normal.
The National Weather Service reported that East Penn Township had more than three inches of rain, while other areas of the county had nearly two inches of rainfall.
Carol Addy, of the Central Carbon Municipal Authority in Lehighton, said that the "treatment plant went into storm mode but that everything was fine." She said that while full readings were not available, she believed that Lehighton received about three inches of rainfall.
Walnutport, Lehigh County, reported the most rain from the quick-hitting storm, with nearly seven inches of rainfall, the most rainfall of any community in the area.
Berlinsville, a neighboring community of Walnutport was close with nearly six inches.
Monroe County also had rain. Not quite three inches fell in Kresgeville, Brodheadsville, and Coolbaugh Township.
In Schuylkill County, the Schuylkill River rose from Saturday's rainfall event to a high of 7.25 feet, which was still well below flood level.
According to the National Weather Service, today's weather will be partly sunny with scattered showers and thunderstorms with a high in the low 80s.
There is a 40 percent chance of rain today.
Tonight, we will see partly cloudy skis and possible scattered showers and thunderstorms in the evening.
Tomorrow will be partly sunny, with scattered showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon.
A high temperature of 80 is expected and there is a 50 percent chance of rain.
