A Tamaqua man faces charges of driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol following a July 21 incident in the borough.
An officer on patrol at 2:37 a.m. observed a silver vehicle traveling west on Rowe Street, failing to stop for a stop sign at the intersection with Nescopec Street. The vehicle was then placed in reverse, making a left turn onto Nescopec St. It then went through a red light at the intersection with Broad Street.
The officer pursued and stopped the vehicle in the 200 block of West Broad Street. The driver was identified as Zachary Evans, 18, of 247 Franklin St. Evans was given and failed field sobriety tests. He was then given a portable breath test, which indicated a blood alcohol content of .177 percent, more than twice the legal limit of .08.
Evans was cited for DUI, underage consumption of alcoholic beverages, failure to heed a stop sign, failure to stop for a red light and careless driving.
