Pumpkins are ripening in the fields. Soon they will be picked and ready to decorate homes and yards for autumn splendor. Many will be carved for Halloween.
But the Slatington Library is looking for artists to paint pumpkins for The Great Colorful Pumpkin Contest. Paint a pumpkin and win a prize for your artistic talents.
Contestants must purchase their own pumpkin then paint it with an array of acrylic paint colors to bring the pumpkin to life. You can make the pumpkin look like a person, a building, an animal or whatever you want but paint it as colorful as possible.
Entry is free. Only one entry per person.
For this contest, pumpkins must NOT be carved or have any holes or they will be disqualified. Parents may not paint the pumpkin then enter it for their child.
You do not need to be a Slatington resident to enter this contest but you must be registered to qualify. The registration deadline is Wednesday, Oct. 20. Entry forms are available at the Slatington Library, Slatington Diner and at the His and Her Shop in the 600 block of Slatington. You may also send in the entry. Be sure to PRINT your name, address, phone, age and division. Send entry to: The Great Colorful Pumpkin Contest, 721 Main Street Slatington, PA. 18080. The Deadline Date for entry is Wednesday, Oct. 20. Late entries will not be accepted.
The divisions are:
*Ages 5 to 10. Pumpkin not to exceed 14" round.
*Ages 11 to 17. Pumpkin not to exceed 35" round.
*Ages 18 and older. Pumpkin not to exceed 40" round.
Judges will be looking for creativity, execution of design, overall appeal and use of colors. Each division will be judged according to their age level, all decisions are final.
Bring your finished pumpkin to the Slatington Library, 650 Main Street, Slatington, on Saturday, Oct. 23 between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Awards will be placed on the pumpkins before going on display in the 600 block of Slatington on Monday, Oct. 25. There will be One Grand Prize winner for each division of $25 each. First place winners will receive a Blue Ribbon; Second Places a Red Ribbon; Third places, a Yellow Ribbon. All contestants will receive participation ribbons.
To see if you have won your division, you will need to go around the 600 block of Slatington to search for your pumpkin. The awards will be on the pumpkins. Grand prize money will be given when the pumpkins are picked-up. All finished pumpkins will be placed on display in the windows of the downtown Slatington businesses for the public to view.
Pumpkins must remain on display until Monday, Nov. 1. You can then pick up your pumpkins at the Slatington Library from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
