Priesthood Sunday, October 31, 2010, is a special day set aside to honor the priesthood in the United States.

It is a day to reflect upon and affirm the role of the priesthood in the life of the Church as a central one.

This nationwide event is coordinated by the USA Council of Serra International, which is an organization of lay men and women whose mission is to foster and affirm vocations to the ministerial priesthood and vowed religious life in the U.S.

The Carbon/Schuylkill Serra Club was chartered in December, 2004. The club presently has six active members. The Reverend James Bechtel, Pastor of St. Jerome's Church in Tamaqua, serves as Chaplain

The Serra Club's activities include hosting Holy Hours quarterly throughout Carbon and Schuylkill Counties, with the next Holy Hour scheduled for Dec. 14 at St. Michael the Archangel in Minersville.

The clubs also support the annual Newly Ordained Priests dinner, prays for and fosters vocations to the Priesthood and Religious life.

The club is presently contacting all the parishes in Carbon and Schuylkill counties to participate in its Priesthood Sunday project. All parishes are invited to participate. Parishioners are encouraged to write a thank you letter to their pastor and/or any priest who was important in their lives.

The club will provide churches with bulletin inserts and a container for the parishioners to drop their letter in on Priesthood Sunday. The club will then pick up the containers from all the parishes and distribute the letters.
