The Hauto S Curve Realignment Project on Route 54 in the Hauto section of Nesquehoning has been on the drawing board for a number of years.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has scheduled a presentation on the status of the project during a meeting of Nesquehoning Borough Council at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 15.

Representatives of Penn DOT and its consulting engineers will be in attendance to provide specific information on the project and answere questions and concerns.

The project calls for the realignment of Route 54, beginning west of the PPL substation to Industrial Park Road.

The project is in the preliminary engineering phase.

No determination on a starting date will be given until the project reaches its final design stage.

The S Curve on Route 54 is considered the most dangerous section in Carbon County on that two-lane highway.

It has been the site of many serious accidents.

Route 54 is a two-lane roadway. The project of making the road straighter in the area of the S Curve had been proposed several years ago.

PennDOT officials said that following the presentation, the plans for the realignment will be available for public review at the borough office during normal business hours.

The Dec. 15 meeting will be held in the borough office building at 114 W. Catawissa St., Nesquehoning.
