Uncle Sam has been strongly criticized, including by the AAA, for its foray into the gasoline tax field. The federal government will take in more than $200 million from the new tax. Motor clubs have been insistent that motor vehicle taxation be reserved to the states. The AAA has stated, "The federal government should and must revamp the whole tax structure. When this is done, it should eliminate any tax on gasoline, and leave this important revenue raising field to the states which originated it."
