Slatington resident and La Salle University junior Elizabeth Wagner received the first-place scholarship from 2010 "Philly's Future" Scholarship Awards, sponsored by The Philly Ad Club.
The $5,000 scholarship is for a student who shows promise in the communications field.
A double major in communication and English, Wagner was a writer for the student newspaper at Northern Lehigh Senior High School paper, and then began writing in the teen section of the TIMES NEWS in Lehighton. Last year she interned at the Philadelphia Inquirer and this summer will be writing for a community newspaper in Philadelphia.
Wagner was also a student coordinator on Project Appalachia, an annual La Salle service trip to build homes in Kentucky.
"I would love to make a career combining writing and service work," she said. "My dream job would be to do communication work for one of the big nonprofits in the city and take action with new initiatives and programs. The idea of being able to help people whose story might not be heard otherwise get time in the spotlight, is something I really love."
