A Philadelphia woman who allegedly crossed the center line on Route 209 in Mahoning Township Friday night crashed head-on into a car carrying four young people from Lansford, injuring several of them, faces charges of careless driving and driving on the wrong side of the highway, said Police Chief Kenneth Barnes.
The accident happened at about 9:05 p.m. at the Pine Street intersection, when a 2000 Subaru driven by Catherine Goltra, 67, of the 400 block of Catherine Street, Philadelphia, was traveling south on Rt. 209 toward Jim Thorpe. As she approached the intersection of Pine Street, Goltra apparently crossed the center line and struck head-on a 1996 Saturn driven by Morgan Kevenarr, 21, of the 400 block of Lansford Court Lansford, which was traveling north on Rt. 209 toward Lehighton, Barnes said.
Evidence at the crash scene and witness statements verified that Goltra, who was also injured in the crash, was driving on the wrong side of the highway, Barnes said.
Kevenarr's car was carrying three passengers. Emergency workers had to extricate Kevenarr and one of the passengers.
Both drivers and all passengers in the Kevenarr vehicle suffered injuries ranging from major/severe to moderate. All were transported to either Gnaden Huetten Memorial Hospital, Lehighton, or Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township. Neither hospital on Monday morning had either Goltra or Kevenarr in their pateint listings.
The crash closed Route 209 for more than an hour. Mahoning Township police were assisted at the scene by Jim Thorpe Borough Police, Mahoning Valley Ambulance, Lehighton Ambulance, Palmerton Ambulance, Lehighton and Mahoning Valley fire departments and fire police.
The investigating officer has charged Goltra with driving on the wrong side of the highway and careless driving.
