Palmerton's Solt earns top seed

The District 11 Swimming Championships will be held Friday and Saturday at Parkland High School.

Seedings for the meet were realeased this week. Several Panther Valley and Tamaqua swimmers are well represented among the Class AA seeds, as well as a few from Weatherly and Palmerton, which has the Times News area's highest seeded individual.The Blue Bombers Shea Solt, a district runner up in two events last year, is seeded first in the 500-yard freestyle and second in the 200-yard freestyle. The senior whose school does not have a swim team, finished second in both of those events last year.Solt will have a teammate at districts this season. Palmerton freshman Katie Pielmeier is seeded second in the 200-yard individual medley and seeded fifth in the 100 breaststroke, an event where five TN area athletes qualified. Two Panther Valley swimmers, juniors Lauren Cormier and Karoline Vavra, are seeded second and third, respectively, in the breaststroke.In boys events, Tamaqua senior Ben Tucket is the No. 3 seed in the 100 backstroke.The winner of each individual event or relay in Class AA will qualify for the state meet, held at Bucknell University March 19 and 20. Swimmers who do not win events, can also earn a state meet berth by being one of the top 16 times in the state among swimmers who do not earn automatic berths. In relays, eight additional teams can qualify for states.The rest of the top 10 seeds from the TN area, listed in order of events, are as follows:GIRLSIn the 200 medley relay Panther Valley is third, Tamaqua seventh.In the 200 freestyle, Tamaqua freshman Caroline Kanaskie is seeded seventh.In the 200 individual medley, Tamaqua junior Schuyler Schmidt is seeded sixth.The 50 freestyle has Panther Valley senior Tricia Janowiak seeded fifth, Vavra sixth and Blue Raider senior Samantha Digilio seeded 10th.In 100 butterfly, Alexia Follweiller (PV) is seeded fifth; sophomore Chey Bates (Tamaqua) is seventh.In the 200 freestyle relay, Panther Valley is seeded third, while Tamaqua is sixth.In 100 free, Follweiller is sixth, Cormier is eighth and Schmidt is 10th.In 500 freestyle, Kanaskie is seeded seventh, Deana DeWire (Tamaqua) is ninth and Brittany Erbe (PV) is 10th.In 100 backstroke, Janowiak is seeded fifth, Erbe is ninth.The 400 freestyle relay has Tamaqua as the fifth seed and Panther Valley as the sixth.BOYSIn the 200 medley relay, Tamaqua is seeded third.In 200 individual medley, Palmerton sophomore KP Pielmeier is the fourth seed, while Ben Tucket is sixth and Allen Sawyer (Palmerton) is seventh.In 50 freestyle, Weatherly sophomore Matthew Cullen is seeded sixth; Tamaqua sophomore Ricky Clemson is eighth.In the 100-yard butterfly, junior Dane DeWire (Tamaqua) is seeded fourth while junior Sam Tucket (Tamaqua) is seventh.Tamaqua boys are seeded sixth in the 200 medley relay.In 100 freestyle, Clemson is seeded seventh.In 500 free, KP Pielmeier is seeded fourth.In 100 breaststroke, Sawyer is seeded fifth, while Tamaqua juniors Calvin Troxell and Nate Leibensperger are seventh and eighth, respectively.Tamaqua is seeded fifth among just seven teams in the boys 400-yard freestyle relay.
