Another successful racing weekend was held recently in Weatherly as the Spring Weatherly Hill Climb was run on the outskirts of the town for the 49th consecutive year.

Throughout the weekend of the Hill Climb, the Carbon County borough was overflowing with activities and excitement of some kind for almost everyone.Spectators, in addition to watching the competition, enjoyed a dunk tank, a parade of competition and show cars, and a spectacular fireworks display.The National Guard provided the challenge of a rock-climbing wall and there was also a dunk tank operated as a fundraiser by the Weatherly Lions Club.The automotive event was run amid the sun, humidity, and rainy conditions that prevailed throughout the weekend.Some of the major sponsors for the Hill Climb were Fairway Motors of Hazleton, the DeAngelo Bros, the Weatherly Hill Climb Association, and the Northeast PA Region of the Sports Car Club of America.Approximately 70 cars from throughout the country competed on the 1.1 mile course during the two day event.The cars entered in the competition were divided into a variety of classes determined by a car's performance potential.North Carolina resident George Bowland had the fastest time of the day, breaking the 50 second mark with a time of 49.3 seconds.The current reigning "King of the Hill" is Ron "Sammy" Moreck with a time of 48.515 seconds set in 1998.As Joe Cyburt, President of the Weatherly Hill Climb Association put it, "there was a lot going on here, its not just racing".The Weatherly Hill Climb will be run again later this year on the 18 & 19th of September.
