St. Luke's Miners awards medical staff, trustee scholarships

St. Luke's Miners Memorial Hospital, Coaldale, has awarded its annual Medical Staff and Board of Trustees Scholarships.

The awards were presented Wednesday afternoon at the hospital's board room. Making the presentations were Ralph Richards, hospital administrator; John Tracy, vice chairmain of the board of trustees; and Drs. Smita Mody and Michael Harmelin of the St. Luke's Miners medical staff.The Board of Trustees and Medical Staff Scholarships are each $500 and presented to graduating seniors from six area high schools: Jim Thorpe, Lehighton Area, Marian Catholic, Mahanoy Area, Panther Valley and Tamaqua Area.The criteria required each recipient to be in the top 25 percent of his or her graduating class and be enrolled as a full-time student in an accredited four-year college or university in the field of health care or science.The following are the recipients of the 2010 St. Luke's Miners Memorial Hospital Medical Staff Scholarships.Janan Shafer, Tamaqua Area High School, will attend Cabrini College to study exercise science.Alexander Patrick Garber, Marian Catholic High School, will attend West Virginia University for pharmacy.Katarina Rohlfing, Panther Valley High School, will attend the University of the Sciences, Philadelphia, to study pharmaceutical chemistry.River Merz, Jim Thorpe High School, will attend Drew University to major in chemistry/pre-med.Madeline Zurn, Lehighton Area High School, will attend Ursinus to study biology/pre-med.Candace Fegley, Mahanoy Area High School, will attend King's College to study to become a physicians assistant.The following are the recipients of the 2010 St. Luke's Miners Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees Scholarships.Bergen Bowe, Tamaqua Area High School, will attend Drexel University to study nursing.Lauren Rose Pupko, Marian Catholic High School, will attend Albright College to study biology.Katelyn Zulic, Panther Valley High School, will attend St. Luke's School of Nursing to receive her RN/BSN.Christian Ferko, Jim Thorpe High School, will attend MIT to study physics.Nicholas Hoster, Lehighton Area High School, will attend West Chester University to study exercise science.Erin Techentine, Mahanoy Area High School, will attend Millersville University to study biology/pre-optometry.
