A local nursing home will be one of the organizations recognized by the American Red Cross of the Greater Lehigh Valley during its annual awards celebration on June 22.

Mahoning Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center will be awarded the Good Neighbor Award during the event, to be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Lehigh Country Club in Allentown. Other recipients of the award include Muhlenberg College and Wal-Mart.

The award celebration deals with recognizing individuals and organizations for their work at saving or sustaining lives of other people in need. Other awards, including the Exceptional Partnership award, the Clara Barton Honor Award for Meritorious Volunteer Leadership, Circle of Humanitarians award, and the Special Citation for Exceptional Volunteer Service award; as well as four individual lifesaving awards will also be given.

The keynote speaker at the event will be Winnie Romeril, one of the first American Red Cross volunteers to go to Haiti following the January earthquake.

Romeril, a bilingual communicator with the American Red Cross and the International Federation, will share her personal two-week experience at Port-au-Prince, Haiti. She is a native of Bethlehem and now lives in New York.

Reservations for the event are required. Deadline for reservations is June 14.
