The flags of the United States and Germany stood side by side during the state Lions Convention held in Reading. The national anthems of both countries were played during formal meetings during the convention. That signified that the Lions Club International president, Eberhart J. Wirfs from Kelkheim, Germany, was in attendance at this state Lions convention.

For four men of Lions District 14U his presence was of particular importance, as in addition to his various addresses to the assemblage it was he, the International President, who presented them with their special awards for which they had been nominated during this Lions year by current Lions District 14U District Governor Bob Neumoyer of New Ringgold.

Two received the coveted International Presidential Award. They are Past International Director Bob Miller from Orwigsburg, a member of the West Penn Lions Club, and PDG Paul Moyer, from Schuylkill Haven, a member of the Wayne Township Lions Club.

Past District Governor Paul Barth from New Ringgold, a member of the West Penn Lions Club, and Immediate Past District Governor Bob Argot from McMichaels, a member of the Western Pocono Lions Club, received the International Leadership Award.

PID Miller's many Lions involvements include serving his club as president, fulfilling district obligations including that of District Governor, serving as treasurer of the Pennsylvania Lions Sight Conservation Research Foundation and Pennsylvania Lions Building Project chair. He has been a Lion since 1951 and has served 22 years as chairperson of the District Sight Conservation and Eye Research Committee.

He was the keynote speaker at the convention's Key members breakfast and has often been the guest speaker at various Lions functions.

Of PDG Moyer, DG Neumoyer said, "PDG Paul was inducted into the Cressona Lions club in March of 1964. Since his induction he has held various club offices and has served a chair-person on numerous club committees. He served as a member of the Board of Directors for several years before being elected to Vice President, and President in 1970-71. He was the chairman of the Club Safety Committee.

"PDG Paul transferred to Wayne Township Lions Club in February 1978. He served on the Board of Directors before serving as V.P. and President in 1987-1988 and 2000- 2001.

"Lion Paul's involvement in Lionism did not stop on the club level. In 2001, Paul served the first of his three terms as Zone chairman followed by two terms as Region Chairman and three years as District Membership Chairman. He served as Vice District Governor in 2006-07 and the following year as District Governor. "

PDG Moyer is presently serving on the MERL Team as Co-Chairman of the Extension Committee and is a committee member and instructor of the District Youth Leadership Seminar, the District Chairman and State Member for the Hearing Conservation Committee. He is a board member of the Northeast PA Lions Eye Bank and serves on the district committee for the Lions of PA Foundation.

"PDG Paul Moyer is a very active and supportive Lion of District 14U. His accomplishments throughout the year as well as his past achievements speak for themselves. I strongly believe he is the most deserving candidate for this prestigious Presidential Award," said DG Neumoyer as the honoree was called forward and presented with his award.

Of PDG Paul Barth, who received the International Leadership award, DG Neumoyer said, "Past District Governor Paul Barth has been an active member of the West Penn Township Lions Club for 25 years. PDG Paul has served and held various offices and committees including Vice President and President. He most recently is Chairman of the Highway Beautification Committee, and Holiday Baskets for the Needy.

"PDG Paul has represented District 14U with dignity and respect for many years. He served one year as Zone Chairman and completed 3 terms as Region chairman. He was Vice District Governor in 2001-2002 before serving as District Governor the following year. He served concurrent terms on the District MERL Team as Orientation Chairman and Chairman of the Diabetes Committee for over 10 years.

"Presently he is Co-Chairman of the 2009 District Convention Committee, a member of the Eye Research and Sight Committee and Diabetes Committee. He is President of the Past District Governor's Associations of 14U. Lion Paul is a Guiding Lion and has sponsored several new Lions into our Pride. He was instrumental in our 2009 Pa Extension Blitz helping to spread Lionism into the town of Weatherly, PA"PDG Paul is presently serving his third year on the State Liaison Committee. He is Vice President of our Multi District PDG Association.

"Lion PDG Paul Barth is an exemplary Lion worthy of the International Leadership Medal," he concluded as PDG Barth was called forward to receive his recognition.

"Immediate Past District Governor Bob has shown his leadership abilities many times, most recently as my District Governor Advisor. As advisor, he has always been there to talk and help with situations as they arise during my year," said DG Neumoyer of his immediate predecessor as District Governor.

"IPDG Robert Argot joined the Western Pocono Lions club in 1989. Since then he has held various club officers including 1st & 2nd Vice President and Club President. He has served in numerous club committees. He served two terms on the Board of Directors during 1994-2008. He has served as: Club Membership Chairperson, Newsletter Editor, Publicity Director for 4 years and is presently serving his club as Program Director."

"IPDG Robert has served District 14U as Zone and Region Chairman, Associate & Cabinet Chaplain, Cabinet Secretary, MERL Team Chairman also serving as Extension Chairman, a member of the Youth Seminar committee, a member of the Constitution and By-Law Committee, District Rally and Convention Committee, LCIF Coordinator. He was a member of the State Convention and Necrology Committee in 2005 and 2008. He served the district as VDG in 2007-08 and District Governor in 2008-09; also serving as Council Chaplain. He is presently serving as our District Chaplain and District Coordinator for LCIF through 2013.

"As 2008 District Governor, he worked tirelessly to start a new club, the Bushkill/ Smithfield Lions club which was chartered in 2009. He is presently serving this club as their Guiding Lion. During his term as District Governor, 14U had an increase in membership of 58 Lions; the only district in MD 14 to have a plus in membership.

"His participation since his induction has been exemplary. He has given unending service to the Lions of District 14U," DG Neumoyer concluded.

The state convention included a parade, seminars, voting for leadership, social events and a look at Lions service, past, present and future.

Having the International president present was an inspirational experience.
