The third time could be the charm for veterans to participate in a bus trip to Washington, D.C. this fall.
The trip is open to any veteran from any time period who did not make the trip in each of the past two years who either entered the service from Carbon County or currently live in the county.
In 2008, 75 Korean War and World War II veterans took the trip. Last year, 121 Vietnam, World War II, and Korean War veterans who did not travel in 2008 participated.
Once again, the all-expenses paid bus trip will be sponsored by Richard and Darlene Nothstein of Palmerton.
Richard Nothstein said he expects a "good trip."
"We've gotten a lot of cards and letters from veterans who never could talk about their experiences," Nothstein said. "It makes one feel that the trip is a worthwhile one doing."
Those who take the trip will travel by bus to D.C. to visit the Vietnam, World War II and Korean War memorials in D.C., as well as two or three other significant historical sites, Nothstein said.
On the return home, they will make a stop in York, for a Country Buffet dinner. There will likely be two bus loads with veterans, Nothstein said. Final details will be supplied well in advance of the trip, he said.
Registration forms have been sent out to veterans organizations throughout the county, as well as the Carbon County Veterans Affairs Office. They may also be picked up at the Country Harvest Market.
Forms may be returned to Richard Nothstein, 526 Harvard Court, Palmerton, Pa 18071; or to Country Harvest Market, 572 Delaware Avenue, Palmerton, Pa 18071.
The deadline to submit forms is Sept. 1.
