A Schuylkill County driver was killed early today in a one-vehicle crash.

State police at Schuylkill Haven identified the victim as Jeffrey Metza, 30, of Schuylkill Haven.

Troopers said the crash occurred about 3 a.m. in the area of 94 N. Sillyman St. (SR901/ Gordon Nagle Trail), in North Manheim Township.

Troopers said Metza was eastbound driving a 2007 Chrysler Sebring when he apparently fell asleep at the wheel.

The car went onto the south berm and traveled about 103 feet before Metza woke up. In an attempt to correct the vehicle, Metza turned to the left, troopers said.

The car then began to spin counter-clockwise and traveled across both lanes of 901 before entering the north berm.

The car then traveled 45 feet through grass along the berm before impacting with a large tree stump with the right front end.

After impacting with the tree the car continued sideways and impacted a metal sign post with the right rear of the car, prior to coming to final rest in the parking lot of Schuylkill Haven Body & Fender.

Metza was pronounced dead at the scene by county deputy coroner Katherine Schuck.

Damages were heavy to the front end of the car.
