Penn State Glee Club sets local concerts

The Penn State Glee Club, which has a built a stellar global reputation in its 112 year of existence, is coming to two local school districts:

• On Friday, Feb. 5, at 7:30 p.m. the club will perform in the Lehighton Area Middle School.• On Saturday, Feb. 6, at 2 p.m. a concert will be given at the Pleasant Valley High School.A donation of $5 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens will be accepted at the door for the Lehighton concert.Additional information for either event can be obtained by contacting David Perkins at 610-377-6180 during school hours or by e mail at

dperkins@lehighton.org.The concert is sponsored by the Lehighton Music Department and the LAHS Choral Boosters.Founded in 1888, the Penn State University Glee Club has performed across the United States and around the world. The local performances precede a tour the club has scheduled for New Zealand in May.The all-male organization, directed by Dr. Christopher Kiver, consists of about 75 members.In Lehighton, prior to the evening concert, the Glee Club will have a concert during the day for the seventh and eighth grade chorus from the Middle School, and then host workshops for male sings in grades 7-12 from 2:30-4 p.m.The Glee Club sings music for men's voices from the 16th to the 20th centuries, including sacred and secular works, folk songs from around the world, African American spirituals, traditional college songs, and songs of Penn State.Perkins said the local concerts will include rousing works for men by American composers Ron Nelson and Theodore Morrison, a beautiful setting of Dona nobis pacem by Joseph Gregorio, and Zikr, an Islamic chant from the soundtrack to the A. R. Rahman move Bose: The Forgotten Hero by Ethan Sperry and Gospel style Walk in Jerusalem arranged by Paul Rardin.There will be a number of Penn State songs as well as an appearance by the Hi-Lo's, a high-energy and entertaining 16-voice group.As usual, Glee Club alumni will be invited to the stage to sing the Penn State fight songs at the conclusion of the program.
