A gavel used by the late John L. Lewis, a legend in his time, to call a national convention of the United Mine Workers of America in Cincinnati many years ago, was used to signal the start of the monthly meeting of the Panther Valley School Board. Board president Edith Marks of Lansford used the former UMW chieftain's "hammer" to get the session under way. Later, she explained it was a gift to her late father, David Stevens, from Lewis.
