Jim Thorpe and Weatherly both pulled off girls basketball wins in local action on Thursday night.

The Panther Valley and Tamaqua swimmers also swept their Schuylkill League meets.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Pottsville-Jim Thorpe

The Lady Olympians outscored the Crimson Tide 33-9 in the middle periods and went on to post a 45-23 Schuylkill League victory.

Celeste Robinson netted six of her game-high 11 points in the 19-point third quarter for Jim Thorpe (2-6, 2-3), while Chelsea Smelas scored all 10 of her points in the second and third periods.

Stephanie Sweat led the Tide with six points.

Weatherly-Minersville

Weatherly started off strong and never looked back en route to a 49-38 Schuylkill League Division II-III cross-over win over Minersville.

The Wreckers' Alexa Figas scored a season-high 24 points, while Nicole Calia chipped in with 10.

Breanne Bentz led the Battlin' Miners with seven points.

Weatherly earned its first league victory (1-5) of the season and moved to 5-5 overall.

In the JV game, Minersville cruised to a 44-16 victory. The Wreckers' Brittany Hinkle finished with eight points, while Alicia Panzarella added seven.

Panther Valley-Blue Mountain

A strong second half helped the Eagles run away with a 49-26 Schuylkill League win over the Panthers.

After holding on to a 20-14 lead at the half, Blue Mountain went on to outscore the Panthers 27-11 over the final 16 minutes of play.

The Eagles' Shanelle Koch led all scorers with a game-high 14 points, while Jordan Hoadley hit double digits with 10.

Dana McFadden paced the Panthers (2-7, 0-5) with a team-high 10 points.

A late surge helped Tri-Valley pull out a 35-31 win over visiting Marian.

Seven different Bulldogs scored, but it was Julie Weber and Tara Nahodil who both tied for a team-high nine points.

The Fillies' Kaysi McLaughlin finished with a game-high 11 points.

Pen Argyl remained the lone unbeaten Colonial League team with a 41-14 win over division counterpart Northern Lehigh.

With the Bulldogs (5-2) right on their heels in the North Division by a mere match, and looking to make it a two-way tie in the division, the Green Knights (7-0) answered by winning 10 of the contested 14 bouts last night spoiling their opponents' hopes.

Lucas Dise (119), Zane Heller (125) and Craemer Hedash (160) added major decision wins, while Colin Hedash recorded a decision for the Bulldogs.

Panther Valley recorded a sweep over Mahanoy Area in a Schuylkill League swim meet.

The Panther Valley girls pulled out a 97-71 win, while on the boys side, the Panthers pulled out a 53-50 victory.

Alexia Follweiler (200 Free, 100 Fly), Lauren Cormier (200IM, 100 Free) and Karoline Vavra (50 Free, 100 Breast) were multiple winners for the Lady Panthers, while Brittany Erbe (500 Free) and Tricia Janowiak (100 Back) helped PV earn first-place finishes in all 11 event.

Michael Sloboda (200 Free, 100 Fly) and Jason Gates (200 IM, 1090 Breast) spearheaded the Panthers by winning twice, while Omar Cabrerra grabbed a first place finish in the 100 backstroke.

Tamaqua-Mount Carmel

Tamaqua cruised to a complete sweep of Mount Carmel yesterday afternoon by earning first-place finishes in all 24 events.

Seven different Raiders won their respective events as the Lady Raiders scored a 126-57 win over the Red Tornadoes. Six different boys finished first to help them score a commanding 125-23 win.

Deana DeWire (50 Free, 100 Back) and Schuyler Schmidt (100 Fly, 100 Breast) paced the Lady Raiders with multiple wins, while Andrea Whitley (200 Free), Jordan Nowacki (200IM), Brynn Lehatto (Diving), Megan Wagner (100 Free) and Ashley VanBuren (500 Free) also chipped in with firsts.

Ricky Clemson (200 Free, 100 Back), Dane DeWire (200IM, 100 Breast) and Zak Yachera (50 Free, 500 Free) propelled the Blue Raiders with multiple triumphs, while Billy Breiner (Dving), Sam Tuckett (100 Fly) and Calvin Troxell (100 Free) added some first place finishes of their own.

The Tamaqua girls move to 7-2 (3-1 Schuylkill League) on the season, while the Blue Raider boys jump to 7-2 and remain unbeaten at 4-0 in the league.
