Volunteers are needed for the 26th annual edition of Lehigh Valley Mathcounts, which will be held Saturday, Feb, 6 at Springhouse Middle School, 1210 Springhouse Road, Allentown.

Organized by the Lehigh Valley Chapter of the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers, the event attracts over 230 students from more than three dozen middle schools in Lehigh, Northampton, Carbon and Monroe counties. They compete in written and oral math exams to win the right to advance to state and national competitions.

Students and coaches devote many after school hours to prepare for what some have called the "olympics of math." ESPN has televised the national competitions, which take place in May.

Lehigh Valley volunteer activities include test scoring, team registration, set up assistance, organizing test packets, and exam proctoring. Mathematic proficiency is not a pre-requisite. The time commitment is just a few hours but the rewards are many. Those interested in volunteering should contact Germaine Lentz at gablenz@rcn.com or 610-216-3112 .

MATHCOUNTS®, a program of the National Society of Professional Engineers, is a math enrichment, coaching and competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement in every U.S. state and territory to provide today's students with the foundation for success in science, technology, engineering or mathematics careers.

The snow date for the Lehigh Valley competition is Sunday, Feb. 7.
