Tamaqua girls, Marian boys earn top seeds

The Tamaqua girls and the Marian boys have both earned top seeds in the upcoming District 11 basketball playoffs, which begin on Tuesday.

The Lady Raiders have not only earned a No. 1 seed in Class AA but have also gained a bye into the semifinal round. The champions of the Schuylkill League won't be in action until Tuesday, March 2.The Colts, who went undefeated in Schuylkill League Division 3 play and reached the league's title game, are the top seed in the Boys Class A field. They will start their quest for district gold on Friday.Seven other TIMES NEWS area teams have also qualified for districts. They include the Northern Lehigh, Jim Thorpe, Panther Valley and Weatherly boys; and the Northern Lehigh, Palmerton and Marian girls.The Northern Lehigh boys, on the strength of winning the Colonial League crown, find themselves as the No. 2 seed in Class AAA. Pottsville, who claimed the Schuylkill League title, is the No. 1 seed in AAA. The Bulldogs will be in action Friday.Two other area clubs will join Nolehi in the AAA bracket. Jim Thorpe, with the fourth seed, also plays on Friday while Panther Valley, seeded ninth, meets North Schuylkill tomorrow night in a first round game.The Weatherly boys have gained a No. 5 seed and will face Notre Dame-East Stroudsburg on Friday.In the girls field, Palmerton joins Tamaqua in the Class AA brackets. The Bombers, seeded fourth, meet Notre Dame on Friday with the winner getting a shot at the top-seeded Lady Raiders.Despite being undefeated during the regular season, the Northern Lehigh girls are only a No. 3 seed in Class AAA. League champions are given the higher seeds and the Bulldogs are in the same class as Lehigh Valley champion Central Catholic and Colonial League winners Wilson. The Bulldogs face North Schuylkill on Saturday.Also in action Saturday will be the Marian girls, who are in the district playoffs for the 37th straight year.
