Youth camp offered

Applications are now being accepted for the 17th annual Rivers Conservation and Fly Fishing Youth Camp, scheduled for Sunday-Friday, June 19-24, at the Allenberry Resort, Boiling Springs.

Begun in 1995 by Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission board commissioner Enoch "Inky" Moore, Jr., and the late Dr. Jack Beck, the purpose of the camp is educating students in the importance of coldwater conservation. Classes include principles of ecology, geology, aquatic vertebrate and invertebrate sampling, riparian buffers, hydrology, trout behavior, trout stream entomology, the biology of pollution and the politics of conservation.There are also hands-on classes in fly tying, fly casting, streamside ethics, the evolution of an angler, wader safety and survival and streamside botany. Students will also participate in a watershed project to repair stream habitat, with recreational time for the students to fish the world famous Yellow Breeches Creek.Camp facilities include professionals from various environmental fields and state agencies, such as the PFBC, the Department of Environmental Protection and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Colorado State University professor Dr. Robert Behnke considered the foremost trout biologist in the world is the scheduled keynote speaker.Attendance at the camp is limited to 32 students between ages of 14-17.
