8 defendantsenter guilty pleas

Carbon County Court Judge Steven R. Serfass on Monday accepted guilty pleas from eight people.

John William McDonnell, 43, of Lake Harmony, pleaded guilty to driving under the influence, driving with a suspended license and without an inspection sticker. He was charged by Kidder Township police as he drove on Route 534 on March 27. Testing showed McDonnell's blood alcohol content to be 0.11 percent. Sentencing was deferred to Feb. 24.Christian Bennett, 20, of Weatherly, pleaded guilty to burglary and simple assault stemming from two cases. The burglary charge resulted from March 24, 2009 incident in which Bennett and two others smashed a window at a Weatherly home, trashed the place and stole $7,000 in cash, alcohol and other items. Bennett, who appeared before the judge cuffed and shackled, must pay $16,059 in restitution. The assault charge stemmed from a dispute on Aug. 29 in which he punched a woman.Sentencing on both matters is pending a pre-sentence investigation.Christopher R. Link, 22, of Lansford, pleaded guilty to giving false information to police on July 4. Link, currently serving state time for illegally possessing firearms, was sentenced to 12 months of probation to be served concurrent with his state sentence.Lisa Marie Ciampaglia, 19, of Jim Thorpe, pleaded guilty to harassment. She was charged by Nesquehoning police on July 24 after a domestic dispute. She was sentenced to pay the cost of prosecution and fined $300.Carol A. Nickerson, 50, of Summit Hill, pleaded guilty to retail theft. She was charged by Nesquehoning on Nov. 3, 2009 for taking $9.21 worth of toothpaste and cheese from Redner's Warehouse Market.It was the second time she has been charged with retail theft. Nickerson told the judge she is on disability and that her rent is higher than her income. "I needed to feed my kids," she said.Judge Serfass placed her on three month's probation. Nickerson asked the judge to waive her $50 a month supervision fee in light of her financial difficulties. Assistant District Attorney Jean A. Engler said she did not object to that. The fee was waived.Jaden Diacheysn, 22, of Nesquehoning, pleaded guilty to theft. He was charged by Nesquehoning police on Sept. 1 with taking his mother's gold bracelet and pawning it at a local bar. Diacheysn, who is serving time for another matter, was sentenced to 39-78 days in jail. His attorney, Paul Levy, described Diacheysn as having a "good heart, but sometimes it's a little misdirected." Judge Serfass waived the probation supervision fee, but Diacheysn must pay the costs of prosecution.Matthew S. Cappello, 35, of Highland Lakes, NJ, pleaded guilty to driving under the influence. He was charged by Kidder Township police on Jan. 13, 2009. Judge Serfass suspended Cappello's driver's license for 12 months, and fined him $1,000 plus a $50 monthly probation supervision fee. Cappello also must attend an alcohol highway safety class and undergo a drug and alcohol evaluation and abide by recommendations. He's also serve 72 hours in jail and pay the costs of prosecution.Gregory Ward, no age available, of Hellertown, pleaded guilty to driving under the influence and driving without a license. ward was supposed to have appeared in court on Dec. 2, but said his ride backed out. he didn't call the court office until two days later, however, and a bench warrant was issued. He was sentenced to pay the costs of prosecution, serve six month's probation, pay a $50 a month supervision fee and was fined $200.
