Pennsylvania Department of Transportation workers were busy on Thursday milling the shoulder of Route 209 at the base of the Mansion House Hill going into Jim Thorpe. The project was to help alleviate water runoff that has been spilling on the road over the last few weeks. The runoff, combined with the frigid temperatures, has been creating icy conditions on the highway and has been the cause of at least five accidents. Officials from PennDOT met with Carbon County and Mahoning Township officials earlier this week to discuss the problem and the temporary solution, which was to create a ditch for the water from the mountain to run into instead of spilling onto the road.
