Weatherly picked up a boys basketball win, while the Tamaqua swimmers swept Central Catholic in local action on Monday.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Minersville-Tamaqua

Spencer Bennett scored 18 points while Mike Streisel added 14, but it wasn't enough as the Blue Raiders (1-1) dropped a 57-52 decision to Minersville.

The Raiders jumped out to a 10-6 lead in the first quarter, but the Miners battled back to outscore them in the middle periods for the win. Dave King had a game-high 22 points for the Battlin' Miners.

Cole Weachock added 12 points.

Kyle Harris and George Wallish each posted double-doubles as Weatherly rolled to a 58-55 non-league victory over West Side Vo-Tech.

Harris had a game-high 21 points and 12 rebounds, while Wallish had 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Weatherly rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit to post the win.

Weatherly's JV also won, 43-26. Brett Stallone had 16 points.

-Jim Thorpe

Jim Thorpe placed four players in double figures and rolled to a 72-48 non-league victory over Schuylkill Haven.

The Olympians' Jeanna McElmoyle, Celeste Robinson and Chelsea Smelas all scored 17 points en route to the victory. Teammate Kristin Lawrence added 10.

Jim Thorpe came out strong and built a 21-point halftime lead.

SWIMMING

ACC-Tamaqua

Tamaqua swept Allentown Central Catholic in its non-league swim meet on Monday.

The boys edged out a 91-89 victory. Dane DeWire set a new school and pool record with his 261.1 score in the diving competition. He also won the 100 Backstroke with a time of 1:02.5 and was a member of the winning 200 Medley and 400 Freestyle relay teams. Teammate Jordan Frank also won two events, as he took home the 200 IM and the 100 Breaststroke.

Joann Butkus and Schuyler Schmidt won two events on the girls' side and helped the Lady Raiders to a 124-56 win. Butkus won the 100 Butterfly and the 100 Breaststroke, while Schmidt was victorious in the 200 IM and the 100 Freestyle.
