"It was probably one of our best summer reading programs ever," says Carol Kern, Western Pocono Community Library's director.
Water was this year's theme. For the newborn to 3rd grade group, it was "Make a Splash-Read." The 3rd through 7th grade's theme was "Make Waves at Your Library" and the adult group's theme was "Water Your Mind."
There were 589 children and adults that were registered for the summer-long program. Many of them attended the wrap-up event, a Bon Voyage Party.
"We had over 1,300 patrons visit the library Thursday and our events took place from 2-7 p.m.," says Kern.
There were crafts to make, games to play and refreshments to enjoy. Each activity needed tickets, which were sold for 50 cents a piece, 10 for $5 or 20 for $10.
One of the most popular activities was the Dunk Tank with 226 tickets sold, three balls per ticket, giving someone a chance to take aim at some of their favorite WPCL staff members, who were grateful it was a nice warm summer day as they went splashing into a tank of water.
All of Pennsylvania's public libraries suffered another 1.9 percent cut from the state budget, the third cut WPCL has received.
In 2010, State Library cut from WPCL's 2009 funds, $24,000. In 2011, State Library will cut another $10,000 from its 2010 funding, which now amounts to $34,000. In two years, it will have lost $58,000.
From May 2008 to July 2010, it has lost $20,000 on books not returned and unpaid fines from card holders who have moved and left no forwarding address.
"It all affects book buying and staff. It's our operating money," says Kern.
In order for WPCL to continue serving the community, it is hoping the public will come out in support of it through donations. Currently there is a Matching Gift Campaign. If you make a donation using the special donation envelope at the library, you will receive a postcard of the Eric Carle original Hungry Caterpillar WPCL logo he designed for WPCL.
You can send a donation to: Western Pocono Community Library, PO Box 318, Brodheadsville, PA 18322 or call 570-992-7934 for more information. You can also log on to www.wpcl.lib.pa.us or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
