A Palmerton man faces multiple charges of rape, sexual assault, aggravated indecent assault, indecent assault and incest for incidents that occurred last summer.

Joshua Barlip, 19, of 450 Lafayette Avenue, faces six counts each of aggravated indecent assault and indecent assault, along with three counts each of rape, sexual assault and incest.

Barlip was scheduled to have a preliminary hearing this morning before District Judge Bruce Appleton of Palmerton.

Barlip is currently incarcerated in Carbon County Prison in lieu of $100,000, 10-percent bail.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by patrolman Robert Cohowicz of the Palmerton police the officer received information on sexual assaults perpetrated by Barlip on three separate occasions, July 3, 4, and 30 of 2009.

On Aug. 26, 2009, at around 7:29 p.m., Cohowicz interviewed a juvenile female at the police station, the affidavit says. At that time the female stated that on July 3, 2009, she was with Barlip in their basement at about 10 p.m.

She stated that at that time Barlip was heavily intoxicated and pushed her onto his bed and started kissing her. She stated that Barlip attempted to pull her pants off but she put up a struggle.

She then described how he assaulted her.

The victim stated that on July 4, 2009, she was exiting the bathroom at her home when Barlip blocked the doorway. She stated he pushed her into the bathroom with his torso and picked her up and placed her in the sink.

She then described another assault.

The victim stated that on July 30, 2009, Barlip was hospitalized for being extremely intoxicated. She stated that Barlip got home from the hospital on July 31, 2009, at around 12:30-1 a.m.

The victim stated that Barlip told her to go down to his room in the basement, at which point he hugged her really tight and pushed her onto his bed. She stated that he started kissing her and undid her belt and tried taking off her jean shorts, but that she was able to grab them and pull them back up to button and zip up her jean shorts.

She then described the third assault.

On Dec. 29, 2009, Cohowicz interviewed Barlip at the police department while Barlip was in custody on an unrelated matter.

Cohowicz then read Barlip his Miranda Warnings, which Barlip waived and agreed to speak freely.

Barlip advised that he knew what he was being questioned about and denied all allegations against him.

Cohowicz said he was able to ask Barlip what he was wearing on the dates in question, at which point he advised that he was wearing basketball shorts and a white T-shirt like the ones described by the victim.
