Washington Township supervisors announced receipt of a Community Development Block Grant of $8,500 to expand the building across the street from the municipal offices.

Although it had at one time served as the township office and a garage, much of the building is now used as a food bank.

A $1,000 grant was received from the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce to help pay for banners for Emerald next year such as those placed in Slatedale this year.

Northern Lehigh Future Focus and Bob Stettner were thanked for doing the legwork.

At the Aug. 3 meeting, Donna Neff's preliminary plan for a minor subdivision at 6672 Lime Kiln Road, zoned rural district, was granted approval, contingent on meeting Engineer Roy Stewart's comments.

A permit will be needed to cross wetlands and the township wanted copies of the wetlands report. Utility easements had to be on the plan and the right of way on the side of the road where the development is has to be dedicated.

Joe Miechur II requested a waiver for the 100-foot distance required between his septic system and well.

Stewart said his original septic system had failed and the only place for a new one was within the 100-foot zone. The township will sign the agreement giving the waiver after it is notarized.

Solicitor John Ashley agreed that the letter of credit for Newside Estates could be released, contingent on the agreement that when construction began the price for renewing the letter could be higher.

A resolution was approved in opposition to forcing local governments into mergers and consolidation. There are two bills in Harrisburg that would force local government to be on a county level.

When the supervisors were asked why small government was better, Supervisor Josh Friebolin responded that the people doing the governing know the area and many of the people in it.

The zoning hearing board turned down a request to turn the area of the White Tree Farm into a retreat for Antioch Church of Philadelphia. The church is appealing the decision.

The township will be part of the case because the zoning board cannot in turn appeal the Common Pleas decision but the township can.

Secretary JoAnn Ahner said tax bills will be printed by the Berks County Intermediate Unit. Resident Ed Ziegler said Lehigh County IU employees come from the local area and should be supported. Slatington is looking into the Lehigh County IU to see if they will print the bills. He suggested it be tabled until September.

The cost is 48 cents per bill. Ahner said Washington needs approximately 3,000 printed. There is a $300 set-up fee.

Resident Trina Meixsell said she lived in the area for 30 years and asked the township to make the Alfred Hanna junkyard obey township ordinances. She said vehicles at the junk yard could not be placed closer than 30 feet but Hanna built a fence on the boundary and has vehicles piled next to the fence.

Fluids are not being drained and a building is up that was supposed to be stopped during construction.

She said she had her property appraised and it lost $40,000 in value.

Ashley said it was a junkyard before Hanna bought it. Commonwealth Court let them keep vehicles where they were because the use was grandfathered.

Meixsell said six acres along her property were farmed and she has pictures to prove it, adding that the farmer would speak if needed.

If fluids are leaking it is a matter for the Department of Environmental Protection, said Ashley.

A meeting was held concerning erosion control at the junkyard. The Conservation District cited Hanna two weeks ago.
