The Sixth Annual Blue Bomber Football Invitational Weightlifting Competition will be held on Sunday, April 25 beginning at 9 a.m. in the Palmerton High School Gymnasium.

Participants must be entering the grades 9 through 12 next year in a Carbon or Schuylkill county school district.

For any athlete considering participating, the deadline to register for the competition is April 22nd. There will be two age groups (14-15 and 16-18) and nine weight classes in each age group. Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals will be awarded for each age and weight class. In addition, trophies will be awarded to the Best Overall Lifter in each age group and there will also be a trophy for Best Overall Team performance in each age division. Every head football coach for all A, AA, and AAA teams in District XI received information and registration cards for the meet, but individual registrations can also be done by contacting Paul McArdle at 570-645-8707 or football@palmerton.org.

The meet is open to the public.

Ochoa will retire

Top-ranked golfer Lorena Ochoa retired, following the path of Annika Sorenstam and marking the second time in the last three years the biggest star on the LPGA Tour left the game.

The 28-year-old Mexican will discuss her plans Friday.

Rockies president dies

Colorado Rockies president Keli McGregor, who parlayed a lifelong love of sports into a short stint in the NFL before embarking on a career in the baseball business, was found dead in his hotel room in Salt Lake City.

Detective Rick Wall said two of McGregor's associates couldn't get in touch with him and that someone entered his room at The Grand America Hotel in downtown Salt Lake City and found the 48-year-old McGregor unconscious.
