The Schuylkill Intermediate Unit 29 School District was given authority by the IU29 school board to employ teachers for the 2010 Academic Summer School, in action taken at its monthly meeting Monday evening at the Maple Avenue Campus, Marlin, Norwegian Township. The board approval of the hiring will be ratified at its June meeting.

The registration deadline for those students who plan to attend the summer school is Wednesday, June 16, at 3 p.m.; starting date for the summer school sessions is Monday, June 28; and clases will end Thursday, July 29. No classes will be held on Fridays. The board also set the summer hours for the Intermediate Unit and Technology Center June 14 to Aug. 13 on Mondays through Thursdays from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The board authorized the administartion to make food purchases through the Eastern Pennsylvania Regional Buying Group and their approved vendors and distributors effective July 1. The group consists of 30 school districts and is no cost to join the group. Dr. Diane M. Niederriter, executive director of the IU, anticipates saving money on food purchases. The board gave approval to sell surplus equipment which will be listed on the school website concerning submission of proposals and bid threshold from $10,000 to $15,200.

The board adopted a resolution to fulfill the due public notice requiremens by placing items on the school's website or in community newspapers of mass dissemination Effectiveness will be evaluated by monitoring the amount of advertising expense that would be eliminated by raising the threshold, addition to the dollars saved by being able to take advantage of limited time pricing.

Authorization was given to solicit bids for windows at the Maple Avenue Campus. An application is being submitted to the Commonwealth Financing Authority for grant of $500,000 to be used to improve the energy efficiency of the IU facility through the installation of air conditioning, heating and ventilation equipment qualified by Energy Service Company. The grant requires a $500,000 match, which Dr. Niederriter reported is available through current funds at no additional cost to member districts.

Personnel matters

The board ratified the following personnel matters:

Hired Megan Madenford, part-time teacher aide at Pine Grove Area Elementary to a full-time teacher aid at $7.75 per hour; accepted the resignations of Sandra Herring, part-time teacher aide at Pine Grove Area Elementary; and Eleanor Yuhas, part-time teacher aide at Schuylkill Haven Area Elementary; changed Heather Carjaval from day-to-day substitute teacher to a part-time teacher aide at Pine Grove Elementary at $7.75 per hour; Alissa Hoffman, Ashland, as a part-time teacher aide in the Adolescent Institute of Bebavioral Health Class at $47.75 per hour.

Also, Susan Oswald, special education teacher, to provide homedbound instruction for a Pine Grove student for five hours per week at $25 per hour plus mileage from school to home and return; Kim Sutter, Pottsville, payment of $1,000 for additional duties and responsibilities in the Pregnant and Parenting Teen Program; Eileen Puglia as a mentor teacher for the current school year and Michael Clay, drafting and design evening instructor in the Schuylkill Technology Center at $18 per hour for 15 hours.

Permission was granted to the residential and industrial electricity and carpentry students and instructors to construct a windmill at the South Campus of the Schuylkill Technology Center to power the small air-generating fans in the green house.

Approval was given for the senior class, advisors and chaperones to participate in a field trip to Knoebel's Grove on May 26 with the cost of the trip to be paid by the senior class. A contact between Health Sciences Libraries Consortium of Philadelphia and the IU was approved in amount of $145,600 to porvide services to the statewide Power Library Support Program.

The board revised the school calendar pertaining to inservice days for the 2010-2011 school year. Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 18 and 19; inservice days will be held for new and first year teachers only; Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 23 and 24, inservice days for teachers only; Friday, June 3, 2011, inservice day for teachers only and Monday, June 6, 2011, inservice day for new and first year teachers only.

The Maple Avenue Campus graduation commencement will be held in the gymnasium on Wednesday, June 2, at 7 p.m. The boad approved the sale of a used Hunter alignment lift for $2,500 to Hunter Engineering Company.
